Upper East and West Manhattan, New York

I was suppose to work in Harlem yesterday, but I didn't make it there instead, I ended up working in upper east and west Manhattan and actually I'm happy I did, because I got to meet and photograph this guy: No other than The New York Times's legendary street fashion style photographer Bill Cunningham!

First time I ever heard about Mr Cunningham was about two years ago, when some of my friends recommended a documentary about this old guy who had been doing street style photography for years. I was instantly sold and what a feel good documentary it was!

I was just walking up Madison avenue Manhattan, when I saw these group of people taking shots of these models posing in front of a shop, when I spotted Bill Cunningham. I couldn't believe my own eyes, so I rushed down there, just seconds before he turned his bike around and left. I only got to snap a picture of him ones... luckily for me I just hit it with one shot!

One more thing that almost made me break my neck, was this adorable dog "Manny", who had to remove her upper jaw because of cancer!

I really love the subways of New York! It makes your life easier to move around and there is almost always some sort of live entertainment!

Midtown, New York!

I'm not a big fan of midtown, not in Copenhagen and not here either. Too many people and too many tourists with a camera like me;-) Don't get me wrong, it is pretty cool on Time Square, the big screens and commerciel signs, yellow cabs and etc. its looks great. I've been to NYC three times before and now I just want to see something else. So after two days of work there, I'm ready to move to my next location, which is Harlem!

5pointz, a very colorful landmark!

Today I visited what I think, is one of the world's most colorful landmark, The 5Pointz Aerosol Art Center, Inc. An outdoor art exhibit space in Long Island City, New York. A graffiti Mecca,” where aerosol artists from around the globe paint colorful pieces on the walls of a 200,000-square-foot factory building. 

 

I was sitting in the train the other day and on my way to midtown to photograph all my locations for my client momondo.dk, I looked out of the window and spottet this huge yellow building. It knocked me out, all I could see was graffiti. The building was bombed with colorful throw-ups and beatiful pieces of art. I had my eyes on it to I couldn't see it anymore. 

So today I decided I'd deserved a day off from work and just go see what the hell I want.
5pointz was the obvious choice!

I was amazed when I could see the building from the subway train. Already from a big distance I could see Biggie's big face on the roof/side of the building. So big, it looked he was staring at  you all the way to the Court Square station.

If you've been to NYC, you know about the food stands there. They are alll over the city and 80% of them must be standing in the heart of Manhattan! There was several garages for them in the 5pointz factory building.

Adam Yauch, Beastie boys R.I.P

The gallery curator is graffiti veteran Jonathan Cohen, best known by his signature tag, “Meres One.” His goal is to convert the five-story, block-long industrial complex at Jackson Avenue and Davis Street, formerly the Phun Phactory, into a graffiti art museum.  

I was standing there admiring this graffiti artist, when he turned his head at me, stopped and walked over to his van picking something up.  I thought to myself,

"Oh fuck another artist who is shy".

He came over to me and in his hand, there was a piece of paper. He asked if I wanted to sign it? 

It had big letters saying Landmark presservation Commission NYC, Request for evaluation! 

Meres told me that maybe already next year or the one after, The city of New York wants to bulldoze 5pointz and  replace it with two office buildings. I Can't believe that they even are considering it!? A place like this like this needs to stay. I had to sign, no question asked.

I hope in years when I come back to New York, 5pointz will still be there to admire!

Brooklyn, New York

3rd day in New York and today I worked in Brooklyn! I think I might have walked close to 20-30 km today and yeah I'm not bullshitting! My assignment here and in London was to shoot for this danish travel search engine Momondo.dk They are making a new app for smartphones and Apple's Ipad, so they need fresh pics for their guide. There were six cities to choose from and lucky me I got London and New York! I have to visit around 175 places in each city and since you saw my pictures from London earlier last week, you know I'm done there.

I really miss my bike, it would do the job much easier since it is complicated to take the bus or subway, when I have to visit all these places. The job isn't that awesome, but I get to see the city in such a massive way, that I think when I'm done, I've proberly seen more of NYC than most New Yorkers have;-) The locations are typical tourist travel guide, shopping, sightseeing, restaurants, nightlife and etc. but you know what, I shouldn't complain, they pay me to travel and shoot pictures:-D
